Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Medal Set - James K. Polk & Sarah Polk

The US Mint will release the Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Medal Set featuring James K. Polk and Sarah Polk this Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET.

This will be the fourth such set released this year. Each set contains an uncirculated (satin finish) James K. Polk Presidential Dollar and a Sarah Polk Bronze Medal. Both are mounted on a plastic card which includes their portraits and information about the release.

The sets are priced at $8.95 each. The US Mint product page is already available here, although ordering options won't be available until the start of sales.

Two of the sets previously released this year featuring Letitia Tyler and Julia Tyler still remain on sale at the time of this post. So far, these sets have sold 9,498 and 4,718 units, respectively. The sold out set featuring Anna Harrison had sold 14,414 units.

I could be wrong, but it kind of looks like the Mint might be gearing up to take the John and Letitia Tyler coin and medal set off sale around the 10,000 unit mark. If they do, I wonder if THAT will spur secondary market value?

I was right! The John and Letitia Tyler coin and medal set DID sell out this morning! Last sales reported were only 9,829 units, so it looks like 10,000 was the magic number.

That's certainly not very many to go around.

I am gland I bought a bunch of them last month. I received them yesterday and there are two packaging error sets!

I never did get any of those. Neither the "Letitia on Julia Card" or of the "Julia on Letitia Card." I'm just not lucky like that. :(

I'm just curious, what gave you the indication that the mint might be ready to take the Letitia sets off the market? I also would expect these to go higher in the secondary market except for the fact that I bought these sets and usually I don't have any luck.

The quality of these sets is getting worse and worse. The P Mint workers did terrible jobs on those. QC at P Mint needs an overhaul. I received a lot 09 sets with various issues. Most of my 07 and 08 sets are much better.

I'm not exactly sure how I seemed to know that the sellout was coming. I guess it's just years of watching how the Mint does it's products, and the patterns of backorders and availability.

With sales shrinking, I hope the Mint doesn't determine that there isn't enough demand for these sets to continue producing them! I really want to see this series go all the way to the end. It will look pretty cool to see modern day presidents pictured with their wives on the cards, with their coins and medals packaged together. The series could very well go through at least the Reagans, maybe even George and Barbara Bush. I hate it when the Mint doesn't finish what they start, like the Historical Signature sets. Those would have been great to see go through the more recent presidents, too.

I agree this is a nice series and hope the Mint keeps issuing those. I like the signature series too. Sad they only issued for the first 8.

I'm going to predict further that the John & Julia Tyler set will be selling out shortly as well, and this one might not even go on backorder status before it's pulled. I base this on the number of "Satin Finish" John Tyler dollars that will have to be allocated to these sets if the Mint sells very many more of them. Since around 10,000 were used for the Letitia sets, only about 6,000 tops remain to use in Julia sets, if the Mint doesn't want to use any more of his dollars for these sets than they did with the other presidents.

It's just something to think about. If you want the John & Julia set, don't wait too long!

Just for the record and to be really picky, the weight won't be 17.5 pounds.

5 troy ounces x 56 = 280 troy ounces
280 troy ounces / 12 = 23.33 troy pounds

280 troy ounces = 307.20 avoirdupois ounces
307.20 av. ounces / 16 = 19.20 avoirdupois pounds

All of which just makes me wish we'd be done with it and go metric.
