Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollar Coin Cover
The United States Mint will release the 2009 Zachary Taylor $1 Coin Cover tomorrow December 30, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. This will represent the final release of the year for the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover series.
The cover will include two Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollars from the first day of production at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The coins are mounted on an illustrated display card with a 44-cent Flag postage stamp. The postmark will be November 19, 2009, Louisville, KY to mark the circulation release date for the coins.The covers are priced at $14.95 each with a production limit of 40,000. Sales of the Presidential Dollar Coin Covers have shown a general decline since the first releases of 2007. That year, the US Mint sold a high of 50,000 for the George Washington cover and a low of 44,466 for the James Madison cover. For 2008, the high was 36,138 for the James Madison cover and the low was 25,476 for the Martin Van Buren cover.
All of the previously released 2009 Presidential Dollar coin covers are still available for sale at the US Mint. The last reported sales figures are 26,983 for William Henry Harrison, 23,679 for John Tyler, and 21,492 for James K. Polk.

Yes, I've noticed the slow, painful death of the Presidential Dollar First-Day Coin covers. The funny thing is, around 20,000+ covers seem to sell right away for each new release, and after that the sales are like a slow dripping faucet!
I figured the maximum production on the Zachary Taylor covers would be lowered to 30,000, but I guess the Mint decided to leave it alone for this year.
I'll bet the 2010 Presidential Dollar covers will have a maximum production of 30,000. It that includes Lincoln, his covers will be a VERY fast sellout, probably on the first or second day. Even if they raise his limit to 50,000 units I'll bet they will STILL sell out.
Do we know if they will be doing first day coin covers for the new quarters?

Does anyone know where to get an album to put the Presidential First-Day covers in? Wonder if the mint would ever produce a special holder for this item.
That would be neat, but I have always been a slave to the white cardboard envelope. I can't bring myself to actually open any of my covers, as once they're out of the white envelope they tend to lose 60-75% of their value. It's a real shame.
I can't wait for the 2010 gold and silver eagles to be released! It feels like just 12 months ago, 2009 was getting started. Thank God almost everything has changed since then!
Yes a decline is ever present for coins that are crap. I am disappointed that our gov't has been able to convince many that these are great collector coins. Thats whats called dumbing down society. The only good use for these coins are in circulation to replace the dollar bill. But the mint can't bring itself to discontinue that nasty germ laden piece of FRN so people would have to start using the presidential carnival coin. Vending machines would be better off too instead of patrons often having to obtain a pristine dollar bill to use in them. Still looking for pot at the end of the rainbow but I think the mint got there first and replaced it with a commode.
I don't care if a dollar bill only lasts a fraction of the lifespan of a coin; no one wants to carry around a pocketful of heavy change, especially those useless golden dollars, presidential or otherwise.
Holy cow, how many dollar bills does commenter above carry around, 20 or 30? I try to limit myself to a 3 or 4 and the carnival coin weighs less than the Kennedy half.

As to albums to put your first day coin covers in... there really are no albums for COIN covers... however, if you're a stamp collector, you may be familair with albums for normal first day stamp covers. Certain version of these albums can be used for your first day coin covers as well.
However, you need to look for albums that fit large-sized envelopes, and ones that use one-sided completely clear pages/sheets/pockets so that you can see both side of your coin ocvers. Coin covers, unlike normal stamp covers, usually has stuff on both sides to read or look at. Also, take note that because of the thickness of the coin and the cardboard that holds the coins, you'll have to half the number of sheets the album will take. For instance, if it says it'll hold 50 covers... it'll probalby only hold 25, maybe less.

I really like the Allsyte cover albums. I've currently bought and filled in one of their Jumbo albums. Take note, however, the thickness of the coin covers limited me to less than 20 covers to one album (as opposed to 50). Also, the Jumbo pockets may be too big... might look for someting smaller like the Monarch one. I want to try the other Allsyte albums to see how they fit. However, they are quite expensive. I'm putting my state quarter first day coin covers in this one, for now.
Another nice one that I have is the SAFE mini-album. Be sure to buy a pack of the single-sided clear pockets. About 10 coin covers fits this album and its a lot cheaper than the Allsyte, but it doesn't have that useful flip-style the Allsyte has.
Has anyone else tried out other stamp cover albums for holding their coin covers.
I agree with the a previous commenter about not wanting to open their white envelopes initially. But believe me, it is SO much more enjoyable to just break open those envelopes and actually admire the covers themselves and put them together in nice albums. While you may not get the $100 for an unopened Utah coin cover... believe me, you can get $50... and that's pretty damn good. All total, I think I could sell my entire state quarter coin cover collection (completely opened but in a nice coin cover album) for at least $25 a cover... maybe $1300 total if you include all the territory ones as well. Personally, that's not too bad considering.
Today is Wednesday, and the average london fix price for gold is less than $1100, when doe she mint reduce prices by $50 ??? today or tomorrow? thanks
They WON'T reduce the prices this week, since the AVERAGE London fix price was still slightly above $1,100. They get to milk at least one more week of the current prices.
They have skipped 4 fixes (dec 25 am and pm dec 28 am and pm) so they should use last wed or todays pm fix but they might not
No, I'm sure the Mint will simply average the existing price fixes in the usual time range (Thursday am-Wednesday am.) There were no fixes for December 24th pm through December 28th pm, so the only figures in the equation are the Thursday am, Tuesday am & pm and Wednesday am. The average of those four figures is $1,101.50. You gotta love it.
