2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set
The 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will go on sale at the United States Mint later this week on May 27, 2010 at 12:00 Noon ET. The clad version of the set was released earlier this month on May 12.
The US Mint has issued an annual proof set containing coins struck in 90% silver since 1992. Starting in 2004, they began issuing a separate set containing each year's quarters.
The 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will include the following coins:
2010-S Silver Proof Hot Springs National Park Quarter
2010-S Silver Proof Yellowstone National Park Quarter
2010-S Silver Proof Yosemite National Park Quarter
2010-S Silver Proof Grand Canyon National Park Quarter
2010-S Silver Proof Mount Hood National Park Quarter
The coins are housed in a single plastic lens and packaged in an illustrated cardboard box with certificate of authenticity. The sets are priced at $32.95 each. This represents a $3 increase over the price of last year's DC & US Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set, which cost $29.95 and contained six coins.
The five 2010 silver proof quarters will also be included in the full 14-coin 2010 Silver Proof Set, currently expected to be released in August/September 2010. Many collectors may wait for the release of this set, which will be priced at $56.95, rather than purchasing the separate quarters set.
In other news, the US Mint has just posted the product page for the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo Coin. You can view the page here.Based on this page, it seems that the coin will be offered without an established maximum mintage and without household order limits. Pricing for the coins is still to be determined based on the average price of gold for the weekly period before release.
The coins are still scheduled to go on sale June 3, 2010, despite a renewed surge in gold bullion coin sales this month.

Yes, the 2009 Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set was a much better bargain compared to this year's set.
How does the mintage number of separate Silver Proof Sets for the 2009 Territories Quarters compare to those of the 50 State Quarters separate Silver Proof Sets? I had forgotten that those didn't begin until 2004. The sales number of separate 2009 sets seems to be kind of low, and it should be going off-sale before too long I would imagine.
The 2010 DC & US Territories Silver Proof Set has sales of 279,885 so far.
This far below most of the State Quarters Silver Proof Sets. From 2004 to 2007, the sales ranged from a low of 531,000 (2006) to a high of 672,662 (2007).
The 2008 State Quarters Silver Proof Set had the lowest sales with 429,021 sets.
Wow, so I was right. Maybe since it's still on sale and is a relatively good buy for what it contains, I should pick one up before it disappears.
Has anyone received any of the proof quarters sets and what do you think of them?
I picked up a clad set in Nashville Saturday, $17. The reverse is DCAM but the obverse really lacks detail IMHO. Georges hair is just dull. I pulled out my clad 1999 state proof and George is DCAM (yes I do know that the obverses are different designs, just comparing strikes, and I don't have a proof of the earlier obverse).
Seems the ATB reverse design has much more 'frost' as compared to the state. I guess for all of the detail. They are all nice but my favorite is Yellowstone. The geyser and the bison are great.

Okay...here's my thought on the 2010 Proof AGBs:
I figure they already had some number of them made prior to announcing that they would sell them. With the demand for gold going up, it may be unlikely that they will produce more. Therefore, I predict that there will be less 2010 AGB made this year than last year; perhaps by one-half.
Just my opinion...
Don't forget to add the sales of the regular silver proof sets to the silver quarter set sales. That takes the sales to much higher levels.
I am just going to wait until the 2010 silver proof set comes out.
It's time for a post on the Hot Springs Quarters production figures, which are now available on the Mint website. Only 29 million Denver coins were struck, which seems like a pretty low number.

Collecting was enjoyable until big business got involved. What's the future of collecting when 10 to 30% of coins (quarters) sold never make it to the public?
I guess I'll just start collecting error coin because what's the fun or value in collecting when millions already have BU are better coins?
