US Mint Statement on 2010 Proof Silver Eagle Cancellation Email

Yesterday, many readers reported receiving an email notification from the United States Mint indicating that the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle was "sold out." Anyone checking the status of their subscription order found that it had been changed to "canceled." This was particularly distressing since the product has not even been released yet.

Calls to the US Mint's customer service phone number indicated that the email notification was sent in error, and that orders would be reinstated. Late in the evening, a second email notification was sent to impacted customers confirming the same.

This article on Coin Update News includes the wording from both emails, as well as some information about the volume of distressed customers that called the US Mint yesterday.

Just now, the US Mint has released the following statement regarding yesterday's situation:
On November 10, 2010, email notifications were sent out to United States Mint customers notifying them that some backordered and subscription items were canceled. Approximately 100,000 orders were impacted, primarily for Mount Hood quarters bags and rolls and the 2010 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin. We are in the process of reinstating these orders and expect corrections to be completed by noon on Saturday, November 13, 2010. All impacted customers have been notified that the original cancellation was in error. The United States Mint is looking into the cause of this error and deeply regrets any inconvenience it has caused.
Let's hope things go more smoothly when the product officially goes on sale November 19, 2010 at 12:00 Noon ET.

I got the same messages for the 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Sets I ordered. I wonder if they did sell out or if it too was in error

11/19 sale will be smooth and organized... No worries. The governent knows how to run many things like the energy, health and finance sectors. Right? I think I see a pattern emerging.

I got the same e-mail messages for the 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Sets I ordered last week. I'm still wondering if they did sell out (again) before my order got through or if it was sent in error. I called the Mint and they were of no help. The lady on the phone told me they sold out of those sets several months ago...clueless to the end.

I wonder if the mint did this on purpose to get people fired up about the release?

To anon @ 2:28 , you beat me to it . That is my thought exactly...

I was one of the 100,000 that received the email saying the ASE was sold out. I lost it and was furious since I have had a subscription for these for some time. I called the mint immediately and was told it was an error. I got the follow up email as well. I did inquire about any "priority" of orders. The CSR said that he thought he understood it to be the policy that long standing subscriptions would get priority over newer subscriptions and so on down the line. I personally feel if you have a subscription you should get your coin regardless of a sellout or not. I hope the mint will fill subscriptions first. We will see.

This is all great but when are they releasing the 5oz silver quarters? Are there any updates or hints?

5 oz quarters to be released when silver reaches $30/oz. Almost happened last week. Need just a little help from government deficit/ weakening of dollar. Maybe if we all buy products made in China for the holidays we can help boost up the price of precious metals.

There is one person who comes to this blog on a regular basis. It is very clear that he is a racist and anti-Moy male.

Simply ignore his posts.

Error email on silver proof ASE is not a conspiracy to increase sales. It is just a typical goobermint screw up that causes hundreds if not thousands of people to get concerned, worried, and agitated. Not a big deal at all from the gooberment's perspective.

There are some people who must find a single person to blame for everything. They get obsessed with it. There aren't many but the ones that exist are louder, dumber, and more annoying than everyone else, so they get attention like the attention whores they are.

The posts about Moy remind me of other posts everywhere else about Obama. In fact, I'm surprised I don't see any posts blaming Obama. According to many nujobs who post on the internet, he is the cause of everything bad.

They also like making new words out of his name all of the time, in an attempt to sway other weak minds with their crappy propaganda.

How about we do that with Moy? Anybody have any ideas? Oh and like a true nutjob you have to type it in all caps. You can also use it in a sentence like, "We need to get rid of the MOY MINT."

I guess I haven't been paying attention. I thought everything was Bush's fault. Has something changed?

Got this email today, all is forgiven...

Dear United States Mint Customer,

This e-mail is a follow-up to the one you received last week which
erroneously indicated that the United States Mint cancelled your order
for certain products. Since sending that e-mail, we determined that
the erroneous e-mail was not due to a computer glitch. It was our
fault, we take full responsibility for it, and we apologize again for
any inconvenience and confusion that it may have caused.

The United States Mint took this issue very seriously. Our employees
worked diligently throughout the weekend, and we are now confident that
we have corrected the error by reinstating all affected orders.
Additionally, we have taken measures to ensure that this type of error
does not happen again. Accordingly, you will be seeing the normal flow
of communications from the United States Mint associated with the
fulfillment of your order.
