Andrew Johnson Presidential Dollar Rolls

Today February 23, 2011 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin sales of the Andrew Johnson Presidential Dollar Rolls. This will represents the 17th issue in the ongoing Presidential Dollars series.

The Andrew Johnson Dollars were already released into circulation on February 17. This represents a change from the typical procedure, whereby the US Mint has coordinated the release date for numismatic rolls with the official circulation release date.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Andrew Johnson designed and sculpted by Don Everhart. The inscriptions include "Andrew Johnson", "In God We Trust", "17th President", and "1865-1869". On a reverse is an image of the Statue of Liberty also designed by Everhart with the inscriptions "United States of America" and "$1". Incused edge lettering includes the date, mint mark, and "E Pluribus Unum".

Rolls offered by the Mint will contain 25 coins from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. The design of the wrapper has changed from previous releases, following the US Mint's newly adopted branding.

The rolls are priced at $39.95 each, which represents a $4 increase from last year's releases. Prices have been increased for nearly all 2011 numismatic products.

Sales of the US Mint's Presidential Dollar Rolls have been in a general downtrend for the past several years, with the notable exception of the release featuring Abraham Lincoln. It seems fairly likely that the downtrend will resume with the release of the Andrew Johnson Presidential Dollar rolls.

The series seems to be continuing to experience some collector attrition, the price increase may serve as an additional deterrent, and some collectors might be willing to wait and see if this issue is eventually added to the Direct Ship Program. The US Mint recently made all of the 2010 releases available through the program, which allows the coins to be purchased in quantities of $250 at face value. The Millard Fillmore Direct Ship Dollars are already shown as no longer available.

I have a question concerning the First Spouse series. Here is the background, today, I purchased the Unc and the Proof Jane Pierce gold coins. The Unc is available for immediate shipment, however, the Proof is on backorder and expected to be available sometime in March. It was my understanding from previous post on MNB (Mint News Blog) that the US Mint must mint coins by December 31 of the year that the coin is dated. If this is true, it means that all the Jane Pierce gold Proofs would have had to have been minted by December 31, 2010. This brings me to my question – how can the Pierce Proof be on backorder? It would seem to me that the availability of the Pierce gold should be clear - either it is available, or it is not. If the Pierce coins are available there should not be a “backorder” status indicated on the coins; If they not available, the status should be “sold out.” Simply put, I can not see a reseaon for the "backorder" status on the Pierce Proof coins. Does anyone want to tackle this issue? Thanks.

I think there are two possibilities to explain this-

1. even though the coins are minted, the packaging might not be prepared. I recall a few instances where the US Mint said products were backordered or delayed so more packaging could be manufactured.

2. the status might not be correct. In other instances, the US Mint has said that backorder and shipping dates listed on the site are estimates or system generated... and sometimes not accurate.

3. or perhaps internally, the coins are moving around somewhere, i.e. in transit from mint to shipping facility.

I am holding an Andrew Johnson prez coin in my hand at this moment. I got it from my local bank last week on the date of release.

I figure this coin, which I obtained at cost, is as good as any of those contained in the $39.99 mint rolls.

I started buying the mint rolls in 2007 but I can no longer afford to do so. So I'm resigned to get whatever I can from my bank or via the Direct Ship program.

Nevermind Andrew where's Eliza!?

Eliza was originally supposed to go on sale next week as I recall, but now who knows?

The price of gold coins will probably go up next week, so we would have been paying $879 for a proof and $866 for an uncirculated. I just hope the coins are released before the $904 and $891 levels (or beyond) are reached!

Talking about the Presidential Dollar rolls, I wish I knew who is still buying the James K. Polk rolls from the Mint. Every week the sales report shows that some have been sold. I would GLADLY sell those buyers the rolls I bought for the Mint issue price! I would even ship them for free, saving the buyers the $4.95 Mint fee.

Eating a shipping charge would be a lot better than eating the entire premium to the Mint that I paid for those worthless things! I just want them out of my house, but I don't want to redeem them for face!

Wouldn't it be funny if so many disgruntled buyers of the Mint's Polk rolls opened them and redeemed them for face that there weren't very many left intact, making them very rare and valuable after all? :)

I'm surprised they did not keep the design on the rolls consistent with the earlier releases.
I may end my collection with the Lincoln set.
I'll call it the Revolutionary War to Civil War sub set.

The change in design of the Presidential Dollar First-Day Coin Covers is even worse! Putting that horrible black bar all across the bottom, and shrinking the portrait size drastically from what it was before will make the 17th and onward look nothing like the first 16! Once a format has been chosen, it should be adhered to for the entire series!

I hadn't bought my 2010's yet, and now with the design change I might not even buy any more covers at all. Too bad I'll have to sell my 2007-2009's at a loss.

Off topic, seems like there is a 99 set limit for the '10 silver quarter proof set. Is this new?

I think that is in place for any particular product.

To the person with the Pierce Proof, I'm experiencing something somewhat similar. On 2/3 I ordered a Buchanan Liberty Proof coin, and it said backordered while the other three spouse coins I ordered were shipped. Well, I still haven't recieved the Buchanan coin and a few days after I ordered it, the mint said it was sold out. If I look at my order, it still says backordered and they keep moving the date back, now it's March 10th I believe. They have moved the date back about four times now. I wouldn't be surprised if the Pierce proofs are very close to being sold out, although I'm just basing that on my experience. Maybe they are waiting on the returned coins to be go through the system again before they can ship them out again, but that is only a guess. Anyone have any idea if I'll ever get the Buchanan proof?

Thanks.

Perhaps the Pierce proofs are sold out, but the Mint is waiting to see if they get any returns before declaring it a sell out.

You might get it, but it's highly unlikely at this point. The secondary market price has spiked since the sellout, so that will likely curb any returns. Plus, most of the orders have probably already passed the 7-day return time by now.

I'm sorry if you missed out on the coin entirely. I'm just going to order my First Spouses on release day from now on, regardless of opening price level. The chance of a price decrease later isn't worth the risk of missing out or getting a returned coin shipped to me. If you order on release day, your coin(s) will be in the first wave of shipments, before they've been picked over.

These coins will naturally turn black in 50-75 years. Proofs and proof like coins will fare better. O2, H, C, and sulfides act veraciously with manganese. Additionally, sulfides are prevalent in the paper used to fabricate paper coin rolls. Manganese was added to these coins as a hardening element - yet little thought was given to its reactive properties. 25+ years out - who knows. Take your chances Ladies and Gentlemen. However, someone will come up with a conserving dip for these coins in the future. Yet, these are a high maintenance pain in the butt collector item, especially when already holdered by the TPG Cos. Platinum and Gold are the only numismatic coupons worth buying for the long haul. From an environmental standpoint - these coins could be a total loser or a mega boon if properly dipped.

Just got three rolls from the bank. $75. Good deal.

Question - are these rolls more collectible if they have a heads on one side of the roll, and a tails on the other? Not sure, but I try and keep the ones like that, and use the others for my childrens' allowances.

Just got a roll at my local bank. Same wrappers as all the others, red white and blue with the president's name in black.

Have been able to get all of them at the bank since the beginning. They can't get new rolls of quarters or pennies, but they usually have the dollars on the first day of release.

I used to keep 2 or 3 rolls of some but then one day cashed in all the duplicates and bought silver eagles. Wonder if I should just cash them all in for silver???

I'd definitely cash in extra $1 Presidential rolls for silver any day. There's no reason to think the $1 tokens will appreciate in value. Other than the abberation of the Harrison roll frenzy, these are long term losers....IMHO

I got 5 of these. How many do you think the mint will make?
