Martin Van Buren Dollar Direct Ship Rolls Available

Yesterday, the US Mint added Martin Van Buren Dollars to their Direct Ship Rolls Program. This program allows you to purchase dollar coins at face value with no charge for shipping.

The purpose of the program is to remove barriers to the circulation of dollar coins. In theory, businesses, financial institutions, and others can order dollar coins directly from the US Mint without going through the Federal Reserve system. This would make it easier to obtain smaller amounts of dollar coins to use in transactions. The program has provided a side benefit to coin collectors who have been able to obtain rolls Presidential Dollars and Native American Dollars for face value.

The rolls can be purchased in boxes of 250 coins for the face value of $250. The coins are wrapped in rolls of 25 with 20 rolls to a box. The US Mint states that the coins are "non-numismatic, circulation-grade coins," although my own experiences and other reports suggest that most if not all of the coins are uncirculated. The wrappers are generic NF String red and white wrappers, not the red, white, and blue US Mint wrappers used for the premium priced collectors rolls.

I have periodically purchased boxes through the program. Once received, I opened the rolls to search for errors and high grade coins. Any coins I did not want to keep, I slowly spent into circulation. During my searches I found several coins that graded MS67 and a few struck through grease errors.

Other rolls currently available through the program include George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Andrew Jackson Presidential Dollars and 2009 Native American Dollars. All of the Presidential Dollars are limited to two boxes ($500), but the Native American Dolllrs have no limit.

The US Mint's Direct Ship Rolls can be found on their website here.

Does anyone know if the coins that have been sold out on this program will ever be offered again? It's really launched my interest in coin collecting since it's an easy way for someone with very little disposable income to get a bunch of coins to sift through. I see that they offered John Quincy Adams and James Monroe boxes previously, which I'd love to get my hands on.

For some reason, they took the JQ Adams and Monroe boxes off-sale on a seemingly permanent basis. The others have all had their turns of being "Sold Out", but they always come back. I don't know why they don't bring the JQ Adams and Monroes back, but they don't.

Here's a good behind the scenes article on the Direct Ship Program that might provide some insights.

http://coins.about.com/b/2008/11/13/van-buren-dollar-not-part-of-direct-ship.htm

It says once the US Mint has sold out of an issue they do not plan to restock them... however, as the commenter above pointed out- some of the older presidents have sold out and subsequently reappeared.

Maybe what is happening is the US Mint is restocking the Direct Ship Program options with coins initially intended for numismatic sales. The article mentions that they did this initially when they added the older presidents. If they are continuing to reallocate coins like this, then it would be possible for JQA and Monroe to make a come back.

I just wish they would lift the $500 limit for each president and make them unlimited, like they did with the Native American dollars!

Michael brought up an interesting point in the comment above regarding the Mint using coins originally intended for numismatic sales and shifting them over to the direct ship program. Coincidentally, the Martin Van Buren numismatic rolls for Philadelphia "sold out" just the other day. Now all of a sudden, he appears in the direct ship program! How much you want to bet that the MVB rolls received in the program are from Philadelpia? :)

I just got 2 boxes and they are all "P" mint coins which are no longer available in the more expensive "VB2" boxed rolls (as of 9/15)

For the person who asked/commented: the 2008 John Quincy Adams roll was the first coin offered in the direct-ship program, long before any 2007 coins were offered.

Also, You can see the population/production report on the website and you'll see the number of coins continues to drop dramatically as the series progresses (i.e. 176 million Washington-P and only 43 million Harrison-P)

The mint-wrapped Harrison rolls (WH2/WH4) are selling for several hundred dollar per $25 box on the popular auction website. The Mint made only 30,000 boxes of the $25 rolls; however I have no idea why someone would pay $250+ when you can buy an ordinary roll for less than $35. The coins in the white-boxed rolls are the same quality as the coins in the String wrappers.

I have still never seen a single Presidential dollar coin in circulation
