2010 Platinum Eagle Design Revealed

Although a formal announcement has not yet been made, the designs of the 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle were recently revealed on the United States Mint's website. The design theme is "To Establish Justice" continuing the six year series exploring the core concepts of American democracy.

Earlier this year, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) had reviewed nine candidate designs provided by the United States Mint. Six of the designs had presented an image of blindfolded Justice holding scales with additional allegorical symbols incorporated into some designs. The remaining candidates included a depiction of the Statue of Liberty's torch, the Supreme Court's western pediment, and the west front door.

The CCAC had supported the version of blindfolded Justice that has been chosen, with some recommended changes to the design and inscriptions. It appears that the US Mint did act on their suggestion to add a loop to the scale to make it mechanically correct. The CFA had supported the design featuring the torch of the Statue of Liberty, citing its suitability in combination with the obverse design. By law, the final design decision was made by the Secretary of the Treasury.

Some details about the offering were also revealed. The coins will carry a maximum authorized mintage of 10,000 coins. This represents an increase from last year's level of 8,000 coins, which sold out after about a week. The household ordering limit is set at five, which matches last year's level.

The price of the one ounce platinum coins will be dependent on the average price of platinum in the week leading up to the release. Within the current range of $1,550 to $1,649.99 per ounce, the coins would be priced at $1,892 each. Last year, the coins were priced at $1,792 based on an average platinum value from $1,450 to $1,549.99 per ounce.

The release date for the 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle is currently scheduled for August 12, 2010.

Great improvement in design over last year. Too rich for my blood but congratulations to those who get one. I'm holding out for a buffalo but that one may be out of reach for me also unless metal price takes a dive.

After yesterday's illegal immigration ruling in AZ, this coin is very ironic...

I just bought 10 2000 Silver Proof sets for around $300 total! Those 100 coins are way prettier and a way better investment than anything else I can think of. The proof plat is ok, but not going to shell out the $, not worth it.
I'm gambling and not buying any '10 mint or proof sets in kind of a protest, but I think I'll get them later in the aftermarket.

Another design flaw is that the coin should have included the phrase "To establish justice" on it. Thumbs down for that.

I don't think the coin will sell out as fast as last year's did, if at all. The extra 2,000 coins, along with the extra $100 per that would be required might end up being the deal-breakers. The 2009 coin did perform fairly well on the secondary market as I recall, but this year's will likely not have the same success. I could be wrong, of course.

In consideration of the "more for less" campaign of the US Mint as of late, how about a redesign, possibly featuring a blindfolded US Mint Director for he reverse of the coin, signifying turning a blind eye to its collector base.

I like it. But I definitely agree it should have included the phrase in the Constitution that it was created to represent, i.e. "To establish justice."

I feel that the designers are getting to anxious to the get to the 6th-in-the-series design motto... "secure the blessings of liberty"

"Justice the Guardian of Liberty". I've always thought "free speech" was more a guardian of liberty... but then again, that protection has to be enforced, and enforcement of laws is a way to define justice... so, maybe so.

It isn't irony, it is a coincidence. I wish people would actually look up the definitions of words they try to use.

Slightly OT Michael, but have you read Eric Jordan's new book on modern US coins? He covers alot of the same material you do. If you've read it you might consider doing a blog posting on it giving your thoughts.

Yes, I have been meaning to get a copy of the book. After I read it, I will try to post a book review.

More coincidental than ironic....

Didn't, like uh.., the '08 plat kinda do Justice to this same theme?

Kinda Redundant,

If the design of these Platinum eagles had been better, I would be more interested. I like the Statue of Liberty in and of itself, but I don't think that, with the spiked head-dress, it's a particularly pretty rendition of Lady Liberty. It has also been overused now with the advent of the ugly presidential dollars. If they changed the obverse to a prettier or more artistic rendition of Lady Liberty, something original perhaps, I would have been more interested in these coins.

Newsflash: the circus quarter program founded in 1999 will continue until at least 2021! Anyone else long for the age of stable simplicity with the good ol eagle on the quarter reverse! The circus mentality along with skyrocketing costs of collecting will soon be the end of my ol hoby. Ya'll will have my collection on ebay soon. It just ain't no fun anymore. The jerking us around with the ASE is the final straw (along with the complete rip off clad mint sets). It really ain't no fun no more! Have fun collecting proof plats that cost over two weeks work take home pay for most of us. Thanks Mr. Moy.

You mean the ruling that was absolutely correct?

At July 31, 2010 at 7:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, the other one that was absolutely incorrect and will be overturned on appeal. That judge has been overturned many times before and will be again.

Please let's stick to bashing the Mint, not politics!

I noticed that there is way less detail on the blindfolded lady than in previous sketches. I can only assume its due to the difficulty in reproducing the detail on the coin. I liked the detailed image better.

"Newsflash: the circus quarter program founded in 1999 will continue until at least 2021!"

LOL, poetic justice. Another reason I won't buy the garbage series from Mr Moy any longer. I simply can't live that long to finish! ~Grandpa

It appears to me the detail on the clad coins has continued to deteriorate over the recent years not only on circulation coins but on proof as well. Looks like they are stamping coins rather than striking them. That would make them look like tokens instead of coins. The platinum is a harder metal so they may be reducing detail there also to cut production costs.

The lack of detail on this proof plat makes my UHR look like a great choice.
I too have been stocking up on silver 2000 proof sets and older proof and mint sets that have nicer eye appeal and better pricing than current Mint offerings. I hope the Buchanan Liberty will have good strike details. I too am considering completely finding a new hobby as the Mint "circus offerings" notably the never ending quarter changes have completely turned me off. We haven't had the eagle grace the quarter reverses since pre-9-11 and would love the mint to stop the craziness and return the quarter to how it should be. Even non-collectors have commented to me how bizzare the coinage is, changing every few months.

In looking at the winning design, it looks like a kid in my son Joey's 4th grade class was in charge of making the die for lady liberty.

One more crappy obverse, waiting on proof silver eagle (with detail on Lady Liberty!). The proof platinum crap series for the wealthy, no thanks.

I for one cannot wait for next year, when the number one design has lady libery is wearing a hemp leaf on the front, smoking a water pipe on the back.

WIll it ever happen? Found statement on US Mint site.

Note: The United States Mint is working diligently with current and potential blank suppliers to increase the supply of bullion coin blanks, so it can offer to the public the proof and uncirculated versions of American Eagle silver, gold, and platinum coins in 2010.
