September 11 National Medals on Sale June 20
Earlier today, the United States Mint announced the sales start date and pricing for the 2011 September 11 National Medal. The final design selections were also provided.
The obverse features Liberty holding the Lamp of Remembrance with two beacons of light in the background. These elements symbolize "not just the immeasurable loss on that fateful day, but also the resiliency and triumph of those who persevered." The inscriptions read ALWAYS REMEMBER and 2001-2011.
The reverse depicts an eagle against a background of flowing water. The eagle symbolizes "the strength of the survivors, families and Nation" while the water is "emblematic of peace, serenity, healing and the continuity of life." The inscriptions below are HONOR and HOPE.
The obverse was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The reverse was designed by Weaver and sculpted by Joseph Menna.
When the CFA and CCAC reviewed the design candidates provided by the US Mint, both had recommended the selected obverse. The CFA recommended the selected reverse, while the CCAC recommended a version with the same image but a different inscription.
Initially, there were ten obverse design candidates and 16 different reverse design candidates. All of the candidate designs can be viewed here.
The September 11 National Medals will be struck at the Philadelphia and West Point Mint in proof quality. Medals bearing either the "P" or "W" mint mark can be ordered separately. The maximum mintage across both options is 2,000,000.
Each medal contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The diameter of the coins is 1.598 inches (the same as the American Silver Eagle). The edge of the coins is smooth.
The US Mint will begin sales of the September 11 National Medals on June 20, 2011. However, the medals are not expected to begin shipping until September 1, 2011.
Pricing for the medals will be $56.95 during an introductory period from June 20, 2011 through August 18, 2011 at 5:00 PM. Any medals ordered during this period will receive a document showcasing the artwork for the designs, descriptions, and the signature of the Acting Mint Director. After the introductory period, the medals will be priced at $66.95. A sales ending date is not provided, however the authorizing legislation stipulates that no medals may be struck after December 31, 2012.
A surcharge of $10 is included in the purchase price. These surcharges will be distributed to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to support operations and maintenance.

I'm down for one from each mint.
I much preferred the "No day shall erase you from the memory of time" wording. The current is just too generic.
I preferred "Never Forget" instead of "Always Remember"
FONT SUCKS!, but the idea is good. As a Firefighter, i'm in for a few of each. These would make great retirement gifts for Firefighters.
Do ya know if they are gona come in a box or other display means?

I'd rather just donate funds directly to firefighters than buy this coin. The design is poor and too abstract.
I believe the mint is heading in the right direction with this design. The large block fonts could be improved. Should be a sell out probably before the end of year.
Very good design. My guess an easy sell out as the telemarketers try to jack $100+ per medal to the general populus.
2 million...a sell out? I don't think so. These will be selling for melt in a couple of years.
Easy sell out. Just look at how these commerative events can be sold to the general public. When the IKE dollar came out in 71 with the moon landing reverse it sold over 10 million units between the proof and unc.
Being a medal it can probably be minted indefinately, unlike coinage which can only be minted in the year stated on the coin.
Like a nice 1 oz silver round.

Although this coin will have wide appeal to all Americans I think many New Yorkers will have a very strong desire for the coin just because of their proximity to events. They may account for most of the sales probably several hundred thousand or more. Sell out of 2 million before end of year? Yes, I believe it is possible with the caveat of no order limits and that silver doesn't skyrocket to some crazy price.

I believe you should buy these for what they stand for, not what the value is now or in the future. I have a display of my Silver Eagles in my office at work and these two coins will be displayed front and center with the Eagles! God Bless the United States of America!!!
Instead of the fluffy obama slogan of "(dashed) hope"...I would have preferred to have "Let's Roll" and the eagle clutching osama's dead carcass as previously mentioned. I understand it's a memorial coin, but this is too neutered for my tastes.

The design has been finalized. So be it. Sometimes, many times, the best design is not chosen for artistic or political reasons.
I believe there are multiple people who believe that "Never Forget" would of been better. So it is not one person.
What I can remember from my time down at Ground Zero digging for pieces of people so we could get them a proper burial and closure for their families was the signs "NEVER FORGET" plastered around Lower Manhattan.
You can "always remember" sitting in your living room watching CNN during the days following September 11, 2001 but those whose "Life" was in the trenches will "never forget".
Anyway the medals go on sale on June 20th. Enjoy!

What are we remembering, exactly? That people can be motivated by religion to do some terrible things, is I believe the most valuable take-away from the deaths of 9-11. How peculiar, then, so say "God Bless the USA", exactly what the extremists on the other side are saying about their god.
These medals are not attractive or innovative, and there is no way they will even approach a sell-out. For some reason, collecting medals just isn't as exciting as collecting coins. I agree with the poster who thinks these will be worth melt in a few years.

high mintage, low sale may make it a winner. A bit disappointed at the vague design, not sure will buy one at all.
I think it iz pretty. I bet they make more than 2 million, made 3 or 4 at least. Maybe they will also add a O mint mark and maybe a D. This makes it big time winner!
Please read the details before posting, folks. Mintage is limited to 2 million between Philly and W. Point and medals can not be minted after year ends. They won't sell out quickly, I suspect, but the appeal is broad, and if you buy in the first 6 weeks, you save $10 per medal and get the special certificate. I don't collect many medals, but I am down for one of each.
I think sells of these will depend on how well the Mint promotes them...TV ads would make people aware of these and increase sells.
Likewise...I think the 2010 5 oz Silver ATB's (both versions) will be big hits down the road...95% of Americans do not realize the Mint is producing ATB quarters, much less the 5 oz silver ATB's.
I was at my dentist yesterday and the lady that cleaned my teeth was very aware of the 50 State Quarter program because her husband collected them. But she, nor her husband had heard about the ATB series.
So again, I think everyone will do well down the road with the 2010 5 oz'ers
Well, sorry I went off subject...my main point is if the Mint "advertises" the 2011 medal, it will do ok but will not be something that flippers will be attracted to.
On onother subject...I love the reverse of this years Platinum Eagle..if the Mint made some of those in 1 oz silver coins, I bet they would sell like crazy.
This is a piece of useless junk akin to most Franlin Mint "fluff". Save your money and buy a couple of generic rounds.
If you were alive when it happened you will never forget until Alzheimers sets in. If you were born on or after 9/11 you will have no memory of the event nor will it be taught as a tragic event in schools. Thirty years from now it will either be revised out of our history or portrayed as appropriate retribution for our evil ways.

The entire ATB series (including 5 oz. silver) is a huge mistake. Outside of a very small segment of the coin collecting community (about 25,000 or so people), nobody really cares about them. The general population was fascinated with the state quarters because of the novelty, but now design change fatigue has set in. As much as the state quarter program was a huge success, the ATB program is and will continue to be a failure. Kids and grandmas couldn't care less this time around.
I think you are absolutely wrong. The ATB, just like the ASE, is a tool to hedge on inflation, weak ecomony, and dollar devaluation. It is a good idea to have something pricing between 1 oz gold and 1 oz silver.I see the value when I loose $50k in my stock pofolio today while my silver is still going up.
If you really want to invest in silver (or any PM) as a hedge against inflation, you should be buying at prices much closer to spot than the ATB or ASE or any US Mint product for that matter. It will take you forever to even recoup the premium you paid never mind make a significant profit.
That's nonsense. I guess the rolls of ASE's I bought in 2008 and 2009 will take forever to make a profit.
You can buy ASE and ATB bullion as an investor in PM's. Most places will let you know their buy back price. When you sell ASE's, you get above spot.
My rule of thumb when I buy is spot plus $4.00. I won't budge above that. I have sold rolls face to face for spot plus $4.00 privately to an investor. I don't sell back to a dealer. I sold 2 rolls to my boss when silver was $46 an ounce in late April. I told my boss it would spot plus $4.00 to make $50 an ounce. So he gave me $2,000.00 cash.

Your boss is probably not too happy now that silver is $35/oz, meaning he could have paid $39 an ounce instead of $50.
Ordered a "P" and a "W" at 12:14 plus 2 other items today, no problem at all. Stopped buying the collector ATB after Yellowstone. I prefer my bullion sets finish over the WEIRD finish that can be described sooooo many different ways. Don't care about the difference between 27K and 33K either. Buy what you like !
