2010 ATB Silver Bullion Coins Available
A few of the US Mint's authorized purchasers have just made their 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins available for purchase. This is likely in response to the US Mint requirement that AP's must sell their entire allotment of 2010-dated coins in order to be eligible to order the upcoming 2011 releases.
While previous sales by AP's have sometimes been complicated by requirements to call or place orders at a specific time or provide social security numbers, the latest availability is comparatively more streamlined.
Jack Hunt Coin Brokers is accepting orders at the site JackHuntATB.com. The price is $860.20 plus $88.00 shipping. Coins shipped to New York addresses are subject to sales tax and payments must be made by money order. The total cost is actually just a little bit higher than the spot price of silver. Ironically, these low mintage coins are one of the lowest premium methods to purchase .999 fine silver, while they last.
Update: A message on the website now indicates that the online store is sold out. More sets may be available after assessing inventory.
MTB has placed coins up for sale on eBay listed at $1,025 per set with free shipping. Their listings can be found under their username MTBcoins. The price is higher than JHCB, but I suppose they have factored in commissions and shipping costs.
Update: After selling 400 sets, in four separate listings, MTB has not put up another listing. That might be it from them.
For anyone who has been considering purchasing the 2010 America the Beautiful 5 oz. Silver Bullion Coins, here is an opportunity. In accordance with the US Mint's terms, each AP limits orders to one per household. A few weeks back, they also accepted orders by phone for a brief period. Some readers reported that they were unable to get through despite calling repeatedly for the entire period. Those who did place orders were required to buy an additional amount of pre-1965 silver coinage to make the total price $1,100.

Through friends and co-workers, I managed to get five sets from MTB. The first person I talked to on the phone was a jerk and hung up on me, but the next guy was polite, patient and pleasant to deal with. They don't take credit cards, and they hold personal checks for an unbelievable 17 days.
The packages arrived in excellent condition, each coin was placed in a hard plastic case, inside a bubble wrap envelope, and each of those was taped to the inside of the box.
The coins were remarkably similar, three from each set were in proof-like condition, one of which had a bruise on the middle of Washington’s face. The other two had a deep satin luster, and one of those had either a scratch or a blemish of some sort.
I know other people have had bad experiences with MTB, but mine turned out pretty well.
Mine too. 3 were proof-like 2 were satin. 1 too had the blemish on the middle of Washington's face.
The guy I spoke to was miserable but who cares. I got my coins in good shape - well packaged and a smooth transaction.
My set from MTB had two "proof-like" coins and three satin ones. Most exhibited minor blemishes common on bullion coins. But, at a price of only $930 or $37.20 per ounce, you can't really beat it. Especially with the rarity factored in.

Maybe the prices will come down as a result of this move, but I bet after they're all gone prices will ramp back up given the first year scarcity.
I already have 4 sets. Nothing like accumulating a 100oz for a tad over spot, especially with these "coins." We'll see how they do in the coming years.

I don't get it. Why is MTB able to sell on ebay and why at that price? They were selling sets directly to the public with a phone call at $930 which met the Mint's guidelines. Are they having trouble ridding themselves of all of their sets and the mint okay'd the ebay sales?
I'm glad I got to buy my set from MTB for $930. I'm also glad I got to buy a set from Jack Hunt tonight.
I was one of the lucky few who actually GOT to buy a set from APMEX on that first fateful night that started the whole mess. I was willing to pony up the $1,395 asking price. Actually, I sent them $20,949.95 for 15 sets, but as you know I ended up only getting to buy one for a much cheaper Mint-imposed price and received a refund of $20,070.05. Bummer, I would have rather had the coins! :)
When you factor in the 10% ebay fees and 35 paypal fees, MTB is making less money on these sets than they were making when they sold them for $930 cash.
MTB's ebay listing has officially sold out now - 100 sets sold at $1,025 each in a few hours.

Sounds like the 1, 5 coin set per household does not apply to some who slammed and slammed the Mint and the APs.
As far at the ATB fiasco has gone, I would grade each AP as such:
(A) A-Mark - Sold coins relatively quick, at fair price, and in best condition of any AP. 3 out of every 4 of my A-Mark coins is MS69 after regrading.
(B) MTB - Sold coins relatively quick, at fair price... no online ordering though (phone only), required annoying account setup forms, several weeks for shipping, and only accepted checks
(B) Fidelitrade - Sold coins relatively quick, at fair price... no online ordering though, required annoying account setup forms, several weeks for shipping, and only accepted checks
(C) Dillon Gage - slow selling coins, horrible communication
(C) Jack Hunt Coin Broker - extremely slow to sell any coins, horrible communication, horrible attitude towards customers, only accepts Money Orders - atleast they setup a website though
(F-) APMEX - Instigated the price gouging, only offered 1,000 sets to public - probably sold rest to CSN
(F-) The Gold Center - Only offered 600 sets to public, probably sold rest to CSN - only sold in person, no phone line or website
(F-) Prudential - only sold coins through a special phone line that was impossible to get anyone to answer when called
(F-) Coins N Things - price gouged, horrible communication, extremely slow to sell any coins, only sold through phone line that is impossible to get through to

Ben (First Post) - Thanks for showing us all how to work the system and get 5 sets from MTB. Good example to the YN's out there .. it's a free for all folks.
I don't mind sending an money order, but the Jack Hunt site is a joke. The site isn't secure (i.e. https). You are just putting you name, address, email, and phone number onto the internet. As far as the MTB ebay auction, I don't do business with PayPal so I need a direct credit card purchase ability. I guess I'll just wait for the proof sets from the Mint, whenever that's going to be.
I had my buddy buy this eBay set from MTB since I already purchased one a few weeks back.
Do these eBay purchasers need to fill out forms like I did? They let me leave my SS# blank. I had to send in identification. They let me cross out my driver's license number and picture. This way just my address was on it. I had no problem doing it.
I refuse to purchase from MTB. They are rude obnoxious people. If you choose to do business with them, good luck! I have nothing but bad experiences with them. I have purchased a set from four other APs.
I hope the Mint revokes MTB's AP status.
This is risky business for them because they are selling for a price that violates the Mint's rules. I understand they padded the price a bit to cover fees, etc... but that is inconsequential to the buyer. The buyer is till paying that higher premium.
I'd love to know the TRUTH behind APMEX's reason for not selling these sets yet. I would also like the Mint to ask them that question too.

Coins 'N Things is also taking orders by phone on Saturday, April 2, 8am-Noon Eastern time. Their cost is $1100....$930 for the ATB set and $170 in pre-1965 silver coins. Payment is by check.

I was able to get through to them when they took orders on 3/8/11. My check was cashed 3/15. I last spoke to them about 10 days ago and was told my coins would be shipped in about 10 days...so, if that is true, they should ship next week.
I must say though, I am disappointed in their lack of communication...I have not received a single e-mail from them...I only knew they had received and cashed my check by looking at my checking account online. However, when I have called them, they have been polite.

I don't have any information on that. As others pointed out, after they pay eBay/paypal fees and shippping costs, they might net the same amount or less- even though buyers will pay more.
It's possible that they contacted the US Mint for permission to sell their allocation in this way, but I don't know.
Other AP's have imposed commissions, somewhat high shipping/handling costs, or required the purchase of other items. Maybe these methods were also cleared by the US Mint, but I can't confirm one way or another.
These companies are not set up to sell items to the public one at a time, and it is obvious that some are not enjoying the process.
At the end of the day, the prices are lower than secondary market sources and at least collectors have some level of access now.

We have every right to comment on the transaction experience we have had with the sellers. Heck, eBay lets you leave feedback based on your experience with a particular seller. So I don't understand your point.
Secondly, nobody here is violating any rules by owning more than one set. You are allowed to purchase one set from as many sellers as you can afford or get access to. If you had friends or families help out that is still not violating the rules since they too have the same right to buy one set.
We have every right since we are playing by the rules put in place by the Mint.
This is how I build and diversify my investment portfolio. I am going to get as many as I can afford following the one set one customer PER seller rule.
Any word on the release of the numismatic versions from the mint? Estimate of pricing?

Yes I do. I understand exactly what they mean. It's crystal clear.
They mean that EACH, and I quote, "Authorized Purchasers must establish and enforce an order limit of ONE coin of each design for each household."
That is exactly what we are doing. We are going to EACH Authorized Purchaser and buying ONE set.
Again, we are doing nothing wrong, nothing illegal, nothing that violates terms and conditions and nothing unethical.
We are simply following the Mint's rules that have been enforced by the AP's.
Don't get upset with me because I have 5 sets. Get upset with the mint which should have all the AP's coordinate with each other so each knows to whom they're selling to! This way you'll get your way and one household will get one set. Good luck with that!

This whole ATB 5 oz. coin issue is no different than society in general. There are those that go and get, and others who sit and wait. I too called MTB and was rudely scorned by a male who hung up on me. Undeterred, I called back 20 minutes later and talked to a nice woman who told me how to go about ordering a set. I also had a close friend order a set for me also. I sent in a money order to Jack Hunt to purchase another set this weekend. As mentioned by others, no rules were broken. Those with some initiative and plain know-how will find a way to get what they want. I have learned that nothing is given to you in this life, you have to go out and get it.

The Mint rules / guidelines stated that each AP could sell only one set to each household. It did not say that each household could buy only one set.
If that is what the mint had wanted, they would have made a separate guideline for the purchaser to agree to, like the one they have for the dollar coin programs. Some buyers were getting them just to get credit card points, and them depositing them in the bank.
I bought one ATB set from each AP, except the gold center (they sold 600 to the public, and sold the rest to private dealers like silvertowne > HSN etc).
I did not violate anyones rules, and I did not sell any of them. They are for me and my family to keep.

When these things first came out, I was really excited. Just gota get those coins. At the price that apmex had, just had to pass. Really became a spectator after that, that is until today. It's funny how strongly (and quickly)the silver fever can come back.

I placed my order Friday night and got an order number in the high 900's.
I sent my payment Priority Mail with delivery confirmation Saturday morning first thing.
I live in Jersey so it should be there in NY State by Monday or Tuesday the latest.
Some people don't seem to understand that there was no rule that collectors couldn't buy more than one, only that the AP distributors could not sell more than one to a family. (So that they didn't cheat and sell them all to their friends.)
Think about a family where 2 brothers collect, or a father and son. They should not be banned from each buying one.
Collectors are free to buy from as many sources as possible and to have their friends and relatives buy some for them. Nothing illegal, immoral or unethical about that.
But the thing I wonder about is, with so many people here saying they bought a few how many actual collectors of these can there be out there? If the average person bought 3 sets, then only 1100 collectors bought them. ( I bought 8 some people say they bought 4 or 5, one guy hired people to stand in line and buy 50 or 100 for him.)

Michael, thanks for an intelligent series of insightful ATB 5 oz. articles, would love to know at mint forced the APs into selling exactly if they were the US Mint. The process or debacle if you will is as fascinating as the coins themselves. Medium and institutional investors have been shut out on the 2010s, and these coins are tailor made for their portfolio types, particularly the precious metal diversifiers. Once the restrictions are lifted on Gettysburg and onwards, it'll be open season on these first year issues as completists that missed out will want a set and be able to pay a heavy premium. 33,000 vs a minimum of 125,000 for the 2011 issues. The textbook case of how NOT to sell and market a coin. If I were studying economics, this travesty would be a perfect research topic!

I was ALMOST going to buy a set of these after this post, and then I realized what else I could get with nine bills, and I decided that, to me, these just aren't worth it, and I don't want to get locked in to buying this whole set. I get more satisfaction from having a set with mostly commons and a few rares, than just the rares. I can't be the only one.
I'm at 242x. I wonder when the cutoff is going to be. Would they sell their whole allotment on their site?

I don't have a problem with the money order. They are authorized as a seller by the mint. Call me naive, but I don't think they're going to ruin their business over this. The swift arm of the law will rain down if they scam us. Third, the website form although not secure, does not require any non-public information to be entered like your SS number, credit card number, driver's license number, etc... I don't have a problem with my publicly available information being plugged into a form on the Internet.
There are dozens of database websites that have your information that can be accessed by anyone. For those of you who are concerned, little do you know, your information is already everywhere on the Internet.
It took me 3 months and working with the company Reputation.com to have everyone of those databases remove my information. I did it because I am the only person in the United States with my name.
So they cut off accepting any more orders, and the highest order number reported was in the 2500's... that's a little stange.
They should have 3,300-3,700 sets to sell to the public.

I'll be calling Coin'N'Thing on 4/2/11. I want to see if I get a second set of the 5oz ATB. I ordered one at JH and was in the mid 800's. I should have bought MTB when it was on ebay for 1025, but I though it was a little to high for some reason. That was my second mistake when it comes to buying the ATB. The first was passing up APMEX sale. O'well, just hope I get my bullion coins soon.

Interested to see sales for first spouse since not much being offered. Seems odd that no 2011 issues yet and 1st q 2011 over this week! I guess even if there is no official change from congress, there are no minimums stated (as far as I know).

Fidelitrade probably has sets left because their purchase procedure is so intrusive. I won't buy one from them because you have to tell them your life story (and provide your SS#). For me, that's a big no-no.
Besides, the money to be made in reselling the coins is pretty small right now. $200-$300 bucks additional profit is not worth the risk of identity theft. A lot of people must feel the same way, or else those sets would have sold out long ago.
Making a 25%-30% profit sounds good but its very risky to give your SSN...I'm also passing on it. I got a set earlier from JCHB

Hunt probably cut orders a little early to see how many people actually send in their money orders to pay for the sets. I'm guessing after the seven days pass required to pay, they'll put the remaining coins on sale. Just my opinion.

Why is everyone so interested in the 5 oz ATB bullion coins from dealers? Because they are cheaper, getting these at or close to spot price minimizes the risk.
Woot! Just checked my tracking number. Jack Hunt received my payment today at 10:35am! I've got my Air-Tites ready and waiting.
Fidelitrade also said they would only be placed in bubble wrap, but they were sent in airtites and bubble wrap. Nicely handled and packaged, but now I have an extra set of airtites.
Shoot! It looks like I just missed out. Hunt got my payment at 10:42 a.m. Was this an inside job by the above post? :-)

Did you fill in you SS# on the form to Fidelitrade? A little reluctant to do that. With all that info, someone can have a field day with your identity. How did the coins look??

Why? Just to rub it in? Everyone makes stupid mistakes...
I was going to skip this set altogether until this blog indicated I could get the set at a relatively reasonable price. I ordered one set just to have some 5 oz. silver coins.
That said, I've made stupid purchases or "non" purchases that I've regretted. I was fortunate enough to not have classless people wishing they could insult me because I was stupid (or they were "smarter" than me). Most people have better things to do than wallow in someone else's pain.
As far as giving your SS# to Fidelitrade; plenty of other insitutions already have it. The federal/state/local governments, the IRS, your bank, mortgage company, financial advisor, credit card companies, doctors' offices, hospitals that you've been treated in, your employer, your health/auto/homeowner/life insurance companies, your pharmacist, credit agencies, etc... The list goes on and on.
You know how vulnerable those are? Not to mention that your information can be purchased in two seconds for a few bucks on the Internet from one of many legally run websites.
If you read the "About Us" on Fidelitarde's website to learn about where you're sending your money, you'll see they're no fly by night corporation and fall into the realm of financial institutions similar to places where you already have accounts that contain your social. Your social is no more secure or not with them than with the others I listed above. In fact I bet it might be safer than many of them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the value of a set of the 5 2010 ATB's will cross 6k in a few years. You win or you lose - coin collecting is still fun!
I just wish the Mint would hurry up and determine the release date for the Eliza Johnson coins. I don't know how much longer we can go without another price increase on gold coins. We're safe this week, but the price swings have been pretty big these past few weeks.
I heard on (HSN) the 2010 set of 5oz ATB is the first and last year for the 3" Dia. coin. All future coins will be 2 1/2" Dia. Does anyone know if this is true?
Michael, I also wanted to express thanks for your timely and informative blogs. I also have made some nice purchases because of them including my recent order from jack hunt. I had checked that site daily and had given up on it. I also totally agree with the blogger who graded the AP'S I feel the same way about them. I just don't believe that this was that difficult an item to sell retail.
From everything I have read the mint said that since they have made the capital investment on producing 3 in diameter coins that they were going to keep them at the size.

The US Mint has confirmed that the diameter will remain 3 inches.

As far as giving your SS# to Fidelitrade; plenty of other institutions already have it...The issue is that these companies need the SSN some by law. Why does Fidelitrade need your SSN to buy some coins? Its a personal choice and some people are not comfortable giving it out. On a side note I never heard of a pharmacist or financial adviser needing a SS#

I picked up a set from FT in their first round. While the bubble bags aren't great the coins are actually in very good condition. No overt PL or DMPLs though.
I'd rate my Fidelitrade set as average. Amark's were nicer. APMEX about the same as Fidelitrade, maybe slightly nicer.
My Fidelitrades set was very nice with what I'm sure will be a couple DMPLs and a couple PLs. There was a little rim nick on one. My guess is all will be 68s or 69s. My Apmex were very nice with a couple PLs and a tiny mark or two just on the clear area inside the rim on two of them. My Amarks were all nice with great problem free surfaces but definitely didn't have PL surfaces, too many polish lines. I believe what you get is simply luck.
Does Fidelitrade put their ATB coins in air tite capsules?
I wouldn't like having to keep looking at the websites for the cheapest prices of ATB 5 oz. Got better things to do. Although I can't afford them, I think buying at the auctions is more expensive but saves hassle.

The 2009 95% copper satin is rarer than the 1794, 1797, 1931-S, 1807 and even the 1877. Gonna try to get ahold of a few of these.

APs spent months cherry-picking the inventory.
Regarding Fidelitrade. The reason they need your social security number is because you are setting up an account with them. You can either take delivery of your silver or they can hold it for you. Like a brokerage firm.
Hmmmm....yes it's possible that the APs are cherry picking; however, since they have to sell all their sets how do they account for the missing coins they cherry picked?
Even if they're picked through, who cares? Given the spot price of silver and the price point of the coins, you're making out extremely well in regards to a bullion purchase.
All the other details that come with the coin which add to their premium on the secondary market is a bonus.
fidelitrade sends a email when paperwork is received, then another one saying it was accepted and approved. now i'm waiting for check to clear and email with shipping confirmation
I placed my order with Jack Hunt on Monday and overnighted my payment (postal money order). It was received around 11am... has anyone received confirmation that your order was accepted and you will receive a set of ATB bullion coins? Thanks
My payment was received too back on Monday at Jack Hunt according to USPS tracking. They indicated they received a couple hundred envelopes when mine arrived after I inquired. I can imagine all the envelopes they'll be receiving. I'm sure once they're sorted we'll get an update.
When I sent my check to MTB, I heard nothing (check deposited) and then like 4 weeks later the UPS man arrived with them.
I guess fedex will give notifiation of delivery

What would be interesting would be to have a compilation of how each AP ships their coins (e.g., airtites or not, etc.). Then we could purchase airtites ahead of time if needed.

Fidelitrade sends them raw in bubble wrap (no capsules).
I actually got nicer coins from them than MTB even though MTB had used capsules. I think it is just luck of the draw.

The later sets ARE in CAPSULES...so if you are waiting on a set, don't buy extra capsules.
Got into CNT after about 12-15 busy calls this morning. I started calling around 10AM EASTERN. Got one!
As mentioned, they make you get $6 face of junk silver along with your order, for a total of $1100.
What does $6 face of junk silver sell for? Did I get ripped-off?

The first sets sent out by Fidelitrade were in bubble pack, A recent one came in airtites. (I bought extras through my sisters.)
Woohoo... received my FedEx (ground) confirmation this morning that my coins have been shipped today from Jack Hunt!
Received my notification (and fedex tracking number) from Jack Hunt as well this morning. Should have it in a few days.
Question is: How are Jack Hunt's coins shipped? Do they come in airtites or not? Anyone know?

You are receiving this notice because you recently ordered a set of America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Coins (ATBs) from Jack Hunt Coin Broker Inc (JHCB).
FedEx sent an email yesterday to each of our ATB customers with a shipping tracking number that stated that orders will ship Monday, April 4th.
THIS IS INCORRECT!!!
While some orders will ship this week most will not and will go out within the next four weeks. Retain the tracking number you received from FedEx, this will be your tracking number. You will be able to periodically check to see when your order does ship. You will not receive an email from either FedEx or JHCB when your package is in transit.
Note The Following:
1. The email from FedEx is in no way a verification that your payment was received. IF PAYMENT WAS NOT RECEIVED YOUR ORDER WILL NOT SHIP.
2. The FedEx labels we have will be used once we verify order payment is received and order is prepared for shipment.
3. If you canceled your order after receiving email from FedEx the order will not ship.
4. Retain the confirmation number you received from FedEx. You will be able to use it to track your package when your order does ship.
5. As stated in our ATB sales terms and conditions, orders can take up to six weeks from date of purchase for delivery
6. JHCB will not respond to email inquires regarding order shipping status.

I just received my coins from Jack Hunt this morning. My order # was 29XX. I had the money order to them in 1 day. The coins were shipped in bubble lined manila envelopes, wrapped in bubble wrap inside a box wrapped in bubble wrap inside another box. One coin has some slight scratches on the edges and a couple of dots on the obverse. The rest are almost proof-like and very nice. Does anyone know where I can get Airtights for these coins?

I just got an email from JHCB that they have not received the payment. The tracking of the priority mail showed delivery on March 31. Has anyone encountered the same problem?
